On Tuesday, October 13, 2009, the multi-faced artist miyavi returned to Brazil for a new concert as part of his latest world tour. While he was still in France for his performance there, the singer talked with JaME about the tour, his future plans as an artist and his previous visit to Brazil.
First of all, congratulations on opening your new company, your marriage and the birth of your daughter. It seems like a very exciting time for you, isn't it?
miyavi: Yeah, it's a very big and important thing for me.
How is the tour going so far? You are in Paris now, right?
miyavi: Yes, I'm in Paris now. Everything's good. Actually, you know, I started my company, got married, had a baby. It's been hard and long work but it's been pretty good. Then after that, the tour started and there are so many concerts - we played Sweden, Germany and Russia. Yes, it's going pretty good.
We have seen some of the videos you uploaded to YouTube. It seems that you're having a lot of fun and you are even closer to your fans.
miyavi: Yeah, yeah yeah, you know, I just... I set it up on my website because I wanted to share everything I've been looking and seeing, learning, gaining through this world with people all over the world who can't come to my show.
Can you give us an insightful view on the whole concept of "NEO TOKYO"?
miyavi: The reason why I named this tour NEO TOKYO SAMURAI BLACK is because I wanted to evolve and develop from the last tour. In the last tour, I tried to mix up Japanese traditional culture with street culture, that's why I had a beatboxer, a tap dancer, taiko drums, etc. This time, I just want to focus more on myself, on miyavi, and what miyavi can do, what miyavi's going to show or... you know, I wanted to make a more important "neo style" for this tour.
It seems like a much more stripped down version of you. This time is much more about you.
miyavi: Yeah, I'm just bringing some support members on guitar, keyboard and that's it, it's a very simple stage. But even so, I'm sure it's going to rock the audience.
You seem to be using several virtual media, such as MySpace, facebook, YouTube and now Twitter. How important do you think it is to connect with fans this way?
miyavi: Yeah, joining these is the first step to interact with people who are supporting me and the lives now are coming to everywhere where people are waiting for me. And the second step, I made my fan club C.W.I.F even though it was hard and took a while. And then, setting up everything on my website, like my Twitter, or whatever can let me come in contact with people and, especially YouTube, the people can see everything I’m doing during the tour. That's really, really important, to connect with the people.
Anything weird of funny happened in the tour so far that you can tell us?
miyavi: Actually, you know, I didn't see anything yet. I didn't go anywhere in this part of the tour, even when I went to Berlin and had a day off, I didn't go out. So, no. (laughs)
I know you've been playing a new song in this new tour, does it have a name already?
miyavi: Actually, no. It's something I have to see about that new song, but no, I didn't name it yet.
Can you tell us something about it?
miyavi: Yeah, the song is about the way I grew with love, so I'll keep shouting that to the world.
Besides this new song, you are also playing Super Hero. The song is very upbeat, but the lyrics are almost bitter sweet, isn't it?
miyavi: Yes, but even so, even if the song is dark, you must be positive. Even if we're in a difficult position, we have to be more positive.
You have recently opened your fan club overseas. Have you got any response about it? How is it going so far?
miyavi: It was an important step for me, to make a fan club for everyone all over the world. And you know, I want my fans to know about it and to meet everywhere in the world, just like my Japanese fan club. Fans from all over the world are already joining it.
Speaking about Brazil now, this will be the second time you'll play here, but this time are going to play in a much bigger venue. What do you think about this?
miyavi: About going to Brazil?
Yes.
miyavi: Of course I'm excited, because I had a real good time in Brazil the last time and people were crazy and enthusiastic. I'm really happy to come back.
Is there anything you remember about your first visit here?
miyavi: Oh yeah, I went to a soccer stadium to see a game, I ate sushi backstage and the promoters gave me Brazil's soccer jersey. Everything was perfect.
Lastly, a message to all the Brazilian fans Co-miyavi coming to the show!
miyavi: It was an amazing event for me to play in Brazil in my last tour, so I'm really happy to come back and see you guys. I'll see you guys there, peace!
JaME would like to thank miyavi, his label J-glam and Time4Fun for making this interview possible.
